French

Intent

At Langstone Academy, we truly believe that every child should have the opportunity to study and progress in a foreign language and promote mutual respect and tolerance of the diverse community we live in.

This aspiration for MFL, underpinned by the national curriculum, fits in well with the school vision: “Langstone Academy is a community of learners who strive and aspire to ‘be excellent everywhere’. As learners we seek to challenge and question the world around us to develop the skills to be lifelong learners” and ensuring that all children are able to do this in a global society.

In order to achieve this, we will:

  • Provide opportunities for children to use prior learning to write creatively and independently for a range of purposes and audiences.  Because we have discovered that children are enthusiastic and ambitious and feel empowered when they are able to demonstrate their skills when given the freedom to question and explore.
  • Immerse children in the spoken/heard word and make links to sessions which investigate phonic patterns in French.  This requires accurate skills and pronunciation from staff.  Because we have identified that a solid grounding in sounds and spelling links enable pupils and staff to be more empowered, independent and active learners.  Children will be able to find ways to communicate effectively and demonstrate increasingly accurate pronunciation and intonation.
  • In both KS1 and KS2, expose our children to a variety of cultural experiences in order to appreciate and respect our diverse culture.  Because we have found that broadened cultural awareness results in more rounded individuals, encouraging our pupils to see things from different perspectives, discover links with British culture and show care, respect and tolerance for diversity. In addition, our children benefit from experiential learning which appreciates and celebrates the culture of the places in which French, and occasionally other languages, is spoken.

By the end of KS2, children will:

  • recognise key French vocabulary and phrases, reading and understanding the main points in short written texts.
  • use key vocabulary and phrases to write ideas in French with fluency and imagination.
  • use key vocabulary and phrases to verbally communicate ideas in French with good intonation and pronunciation using phonics.
  • explore the culture of the countries in which some different languages are spoken including the background knowledge and cultural capital needed to infer meaning from interactions.
