    Intent

At Langstone Primary Academy, we are committed to empowering children to be successful in their physical education. We aim to help develop and nurture a lifelong love of physical activity both within and outside of our schools and equip children with practical skills and knowledge to lead a healthy life.

We will support every child to develop the physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills to achieve in PE, Sport and life by:

    • Inspiring pupils to participate in a range of physical activities.
    • Providing opportunities for pupils to experience and become confident in different skills, activities and sports.
    • Building respectful and resilient behaviours as part of physical activities.
    • Develop the physical and mental wellbeing of our pupils.
    • Encouraging children to evaluate and recognise their successes and identify their next steps.

In order to achieve this, we will:

    •  Develop and implement a whole school curriculum because this will allow children to consistently build upon prior skills and knowledge.
    • Ensure our sessions are child centred because this enables us to identify where children need appropriate challenge and support.
    • Grow each child in their ability to work with others co-operatively because this is a transferable key skill which children will need in all areas of life.
    • Increase the engagement of children in regular physical activity because we want to encourage lifelong active learners who are able to understand and care for their own bodies.

By the end of EYFS, children will:

    • Negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others.
    • Demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing.
    • Move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing.

By the end of KS1, children will:

    • Know what the fundamental movement skills are and how to perform them safely and accurately (Physical).
    • Understand how to work as part of a team effectively, supporting and leading others when needed (Social).
    • Know how to review and evaluate my own and others’ work and react to different game situations (Cognitive).
    • Understand how to respond to different situations, adapting and adjusting skills as necessary (Creative).
    • Know how to challenge themselves within physical activities, setting their own targets and aiming for personal bests (Personal).
    • Understand the benefits of leading a fit and healthy lifestyle (Health and Fitness).
    • Learn fair play through the learning of basic rules and tactics of simple games.

By the end of KS2, children will:

    • Effectively transfer skills and movements across a range of activities and sports. They will also be able to perform a variety of skills consistently and effectively in challenging or competitive situations. (Physical).
    • Give and receive sensitive feedback to improve themselves and others. They can also involve others, motivate those around them to perform better and collaborate appropriately. (Social).
    • Review, analyse and evaluate their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses and can read and react to different game situations as they develop. (Cognitive).
    • Respond imaginatively to different situations, adapting and adjusting their skills, movements or tactics so they are different from or in contrast to others. (Creative).
    • See all new challenges as opportunities to learn and develop. They will also be able to recognise their strengths and weaknesses and can set themselves appropriate targets. (Personal).
    • Describe the basic fitness components and explain how often and how long they should exercise to be healthy. They can also can selfselect and perform appropriate warm up/cool down activities and can identify possible dangers when planning an activity. (Health and Fitness).
