  • Curriculum Statement

At Langstone you will see learners who are:

    ‘Resilient, Reflective Thinkers’.

    The school’s Vision:

Langstone Academy is a community of learners who strive and aspire to ‘be excellent together’. As learners, we seek to challenge and question the world around us to develop the skills to be lifelong learners.

    Our Curriculum intent:

    • Students at Langstone Academy are provided with memorable learning experiences that enrich their lives and take them on a rich, curious journey of discovery – broadening their understanding of and ability to question the world around them.
    • The curriculum supports the development of the whole child, including their physical and mental wellbeing. It explores a wide range of concepts that promote mutual respect, tolerance and appreciation of the diverse community in which we live.
    • Students develop the skills, vocabulary, knowledge and personal attributes needed to make informed choices about how they can contribute positively to society.
    • Core thinking skills are at the heart of learning, enabling students to become resilient and reflective thinkers who can apply their learning to everyday experiences – including the use of technology.
    • Students are empowered to be ambitious, aspirational and to strive for success in all aspects of their lives.

    Our curriculum implementation:

    The curriculum is based upon:

    • A carefully designed curriculum that builds upon prior learning and students' experiences while developing language and communication skills.
    • Providing rich and meaningful experiences that enable all pupils to access the same high-quality learning opportunities.
    • Using the Langstone Mastery Model, incorporating challenge and responsive teaching to ensure that all children can succeed and achieve their potential.
    • Providing outcome-driven, enquiry-based learning tasks that promote independent thinking and enable pupils to demonstrate their understanding in age-appropriate ways.
    • Developing and recognising personal skills through the explicit & targeted teaching of the school's Values for Learning.
    • Offering a broad and balanced curriculum, including wider curriculum opportunities, that allow children to reflect upon and contemplate the world around them and their place within it.

    Our curriculum impact will be:

    • High student engagement and interest across a wide range of subjects.
    • Improved outcomes and personal development for all pupils.
    • Student experiences that enrich and give purpose to learning, helping it to become memorable and lasting.
    • Our pupils gaining long-term knowledge and demonstrate a deeper understanding of the skills.
    • Children ready for the next stage in their learning as confident, competent learners who can articulate themselves both emotionally and academically.

Our school community will promote personal learning that is resilient and reflective.

    Resilience is –

    • Persevering with a positive attitude until successful.
    • Having the ability to think through and overcome problems.
    • Using resources and initiative without prompting.
    • Having the confidence to learn from mistakes and to see the opportunities when exploring.
    • Collaborating and discussing ideas to deepen children’s own understanding.

    Reflecting is –

    • Generating questions and ideas to initiate self-enquiry.
    • Using prior knowledge and experiences to make links and support learning.
    • Knowing what has been learnt and how to move forward.
    • Discovering new learning opportunities and varying perspectives.
    • Children are able to generate questions from their reflections as ‘What if’ moments

Our school community will promote thinking that enables them to –

    • Achieve deeper thinking through confidence and talk.
    • Belong to a community that questions its understanding and the views of others.
    • Take time to focus and concentrate on the task in hand.
    • Debate and challenge each other whilst recognising that an individual has the right to their own view which will be respected.
    • Not accept information without proper consideration.
